H.E.L.P. Foundation's mission is to provide integrated healthcare services to people living in developing countries, victims of natural disaster, war and civil unrest regardless of race, religion or creed. HELP Foundation designs, develops, and maintains integrated medical clinics and teams capable of delivering quality medical care to respond immediately with medical relief, and continue its support as long as there is a need. December 2004's devastating tsunami is no longer news, but the aftermath has wrought unthinkable challenges for survivors such as those on the island of Kho Khao , where the tsunami inflicted some of Thailand 's worst damage. The H.E.L.P. Foundation was founded and incorporated in 2005 by Dr. Gurdev Parmar, soon after the tsunami ravaged SE Asian coastal countries. Drs Karen and Gurdev Parmar were in India at the time of the tsunami, but chose one of the heaviest stricken areas in Thailand, the island of Kho Khao as the first HELP site. HELP Foundation (see also "Planned Activities") currently provides primary medical and dental services for the people of Kho Khao Island, Thailand in the clinic they have spent 3 years improving. In 2006 and 2007, we have been sending doctors (ND's and MD's) and dentists for 2-4 week excursions to provide much needed medical and dental attention, which will continue in 2008. Volunteers are now responsible for raising their own funds to have the privilege of working in this remote tropical paradise, doing this incredibly fulfilling work.
Doctors and dentists that volunteer will have a Thai MD or DDS accompany them throughout their work-term, so as to comply with Thai Law for Foreign doctors and dentists. With an estimated population of half a million people, there are only 75 MD's and 22 dentists in the entire province, with neither in the area of Kho Khao. January of 2009 we will send our first doctor to the clinic for a full year term. The full-time doctor (must have current Full Prescriptive Authority License) will be paid a small stipend that will cover basic costs while in Thailand, and will be trained by the HELP Foundation's medical team in our Disaster Medical Management Program (see "Volunteering"). Also starting in January of 2009, we will send our first "Medical Brigade" which will be made up of 4-6 medical students and doctors (don't require prescriptive authority) that will spend 10 days on Kho Khao. All brigade volunteers will also have to go through the HELP Foundation's Disaster Medical Management Program prior to embarking on their journey. When in Thailand, they will receive a lecture every evening on various aspects of ADLS, ACLS and tropical medicine, and share in patient care during the days. The volunteers on the brigades are also responsible for raising money and supplies to make their trips possible. |
